Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail
During their marriage, Ethan handled insurance renewals, tax folders, and household mail.
He called it helping.
Clara had called it convenient.
Now she understood why he insisted.
He liked controlling the records.
If a bill arrived in both names, he filed it.
If a form required Clara’s signature, he placed a sticky note exactly where she should sign.
He never encouraged her to read the pages.
Officer Daniels asked whether Clara had copies of past tax returns.
“Yes.”
She handed him a folder marked ACCOUNT OWNERSHIP.
Inside were copies her accountant had provided that morning.
One return listed Ethan as a partial owner of Clara’s house.
Another claimed he had invested sixty thousand dollars in improvements.
No such investment existed.
The contractor identification number belonged to a dissolved company.
Officer Reed asked who prepared the returns.
“Ethan’s friend, Martin Pike.”
“Accountant?”
“Tax preparer.”
Clara had already contacted the state licensing board.
Martin’s registration had been suspended the previous year.
Yet Ethan continued bringing documents home under his name.
Daniels looked troubled.
“This is beyond what we can resolve at a doorway.”
“I know.”
“Why were you so prepared?”
Clara met his eyes.
“Because Ethan taught me what happens when only one person keeps the records.”
She had spent the hours after receiving the wedding photo assembling every original document she owned.
Deed.
Mortgage.
Bank statements.
Insurance.
Locksmith invoice.
Property tax records.
She called an attorney before changing the locks.
She called the bank before canceling access.
She photographed every room.
She did not act from panic.
She acted from preparation.
Reed looked toward Daniels.
“His complaint says she destroyed shared financial documents.”
Clara’s mouth tightened.
“I copied them.”
Then she held up a small external drive.
