Chapter 13 - Lorraine’s Signature
Samantha searched the quitclaim filing history.
A cover sheet identified the person who submitted it.
Lorraine Hale.
Her mailing address appeared beneath her signature.
Clara read the name aloud.
The porch became silent.
Officer Daniels asked whether Lorraine had any legal role in Clara’s property.
“None.”
“Power of attorney?”
“Never.”
“Trustee?”
“No.”
The document had been mailed to the county recorder from Lorraine’s home.
It included a check for the filing fee from her personal account.
There was no longer any plausible claim that she had merely repeated Ethan’s story.
She helped create it.
Reed contacted dispatch and asked that the information be added to the report.
Samantha saved certified-record requests.
Clara felt the betrayal spreading backward through years of family dinners.
Lorraine praising Ethan for “taking care of the paperwork.”
Lorraine asking how much equity Clara had.
Lorraine suggesting that a married woman did not need separate assets.
Every conversation had been reconnaissance.
Clara’s phone rang again.
This time Ethan’s name appeared.
Daniels advised her not to answer unless she wanted the call documented.
Clara pressed speaker.
Ethan began with confidence.
“Tell the officers to let me into my house.”
Daniels identified himself.
There was a pause.
Then Ethan adjusted immediately.
“Officer, my wife is emotionally unstable. She is withholding marital property.”
Daniels looked at the valid deed in Clara’s folder.
“Mr. Hale, did you tell dispatch you married another woman last night?”
Ethan’s breathing changed.
“That is unrelated.”
“Did you submit a quitclaim deed notarized by a woman who was already deceased?”
Silence.
Clara closed her eyes.
The silence was more revealing than denial.
Then Ethan said, “I want my attorney.”
