Chapter 14 - The Emergency Loan Attempt
Clara’s banking application flashed red.
A new credit inquiry had been made using her address.
Samantha asked permission to review the alert.
The request came from a private lender in Nevada.
Borrower: Ethan Hale.
Collateral: Clara’s Columbus property.
Requested amount: $275,000.
The application had been submitted less than twenty minutes earlier.
Officer Reed stared at the timestamp.
“He is still trying.”
Samantha contacted the lender’s fraud department while Daniels documented the attempt.
Clara provided the valid deed and identity verification.
The loan was frozen before funds were released.
But the application contained uploaded documents.
A copy of the fraudulent quitclaim deed.
A property insurance policy.
A supposed consent letter from Clara.
And a photograph of her driver’s license.
Clara recognized the license image.
It had been taken from the scan she gave Ethan when they booked a cruise two years earlier.
The consent letter stated that Clara supported the loan because the funds would be used to renovate their shared residence.
Her signature was forged.
Again.
Samantha requested that the lender preserve all electronic records, including the originating device and location.
The submission came from a hotel network in Las Vegas.
Ethan’s wedding trip doubled as a financial operation.
He was not celebrating a new marriage.
He was trying to extract equity before Clara could stop him.
Clara looked at the wedding photograph differently now.
The chapel.
The artificial roses.
The triumphant message.
Everything had been designed to make her feel discarded and powerless while Ethan moved quickly behind the humiliation.
“He expected me to spend the morning crying,” she said.
Samantha looked at her.
“He expected emotion to delay action.”
