Chapter 16 - Rebecca Learns the Truth
A message arrived from Rebecca’s number.
Clara expected another threat.
Instead, it read:
Is the house really only yours?
Clara showed Samantha.
“Do not answer emotionally,” the attorney advised.
Clara typed:
Yes. I bought it before Ethan and I met. He is not on the valid deed.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
A photograph arrived.
Rebecca stood inside a Las Vegas hotel room holding a folder.
The first page read:
POST-MARRIAGE RESIDENCE AGREEMENT.
It promised Rebecca exclusive use of Clara’s house after Ethan’s “finalized divorce.”
Another document claimed the home had no mortgage.
A third listed furniture that Rebecca could sell or replace.
Rebecca wrote:
He told me you signed these.
Clara replied:
I signed nothing.
Rebecca called.
Samantha suggested recording only after confirming Ohio and Nevada consent rules. Instead, Clara put the call on speaker for the officers and clearly announced that they were present.
Rebecca began crying.
“He told me you abandoned him.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“He slept beside me three nights ago.”
“He said the divorce was confidential because of your mental health.”
“I have never filed.”
Rebecca’s breathing became uneven.
“What have I done?”
“You married a man who is still legally married.”
Rebecca admitted Ethan had brought multiple documents to Las Vegas.
He planned to have her sign them after breakfast.
One transferred a Nevada company into her name.
Another appointed her manager of a property-holding entity.
Samantha’s eyes sharpened.
“Do not sign anything.”
Rebecca whispered, “He’s in the shower.”
“Take photographs,” Samantha said. “Then contact local police and an attorney.”
Rebecca hesitated.
“He said Clara would come after me.”
Clara answered quietly.
