Chapter 10 - The Mother Behind the Lie
Ethan’s mother, Lorraine, had never accepted that Clara owned the house.
At their first Christmas dinner, she called it “a starter home Ethan could improve.”
When Clara corrected her, Lorraine laughed.
“A wife’s property becomes her husband’s property eventually.”
That was legally wrong.
But the family repeated it until it sounded like truth.
Officer Reed showed Clara the traffic-camera still.
Lorraine sat in the passenger seat of Martin Pike’s wife’s SUV.
She wore large sunglasses and held a phone near the window.
Daniels asked whether Lorraine had a key.
“Not anymore.”
“Did she ever?”
“Yes. Ethan gave her one without asking me.”
“That key would no longer work?”
“No.”
The new locks were the reason Ethan panicked.
For years, he and Lorraine had moved through Clara’s home as if permission was permanent.
Now every entrance required Clara’s consent.
Her phone rang.
Lorraine’s name appeared.
Daniels advised Clara that she was not required to answer.
Clara pressed speaker.
Lorraine’s voice exploded immediately.
“Open that door and stop humiliating my son.”
Clara remained calm.
“Ethan is in Las Vegas.”
“He is your husband.”
“He married Rebecca last night.”
“That ceremony means nothing.”
The officers exchanged a look.
Clara asked, “Then why did he announce that she would be moving into my house?”
Lorraine paused.
Only briefly.
“You agreed Ethan would receive the house if the marriage ended.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You signed papers.”
Clara’s fingers went cold.
“What papers?”
Lorraine realized she had said too much.
“Ask your lawyer.”
The call ended.
Daniels looked at Clara.
“Do you know what she meant?”
“No.”
But Clara remembered a stack of documents Ethan brought home eighteen months earlier.
He called them insurance updates.
