Chapter 17 - The Red Document Case
Rebecca’s photograph showed a red fireproof case on the hotel desk.
Clara recognized the scratched corner immediately.
It was the case removed from her house.
Inside were the original deed, tax returns, insurance records, Patricia’s seal, and several blank pages bearing forged versions of Clara’s signature.
There were also photographs of Clara’s passport and Social Security card.
Officer Daniels contacted Las Vegas authorities through official channels.
Rebecca agreed to remain in the hotel lobby and wait.
She took the folder and case with her while Ethan remained upstairs.
Clara imagined the moment he emerged and discovered both were gone.
For the first time that morning, she felt something close to relief.
Not victory.
Relief.
The originals might come home.
Daniels received confirmation that Las Vegas officers had met Rebecca.
They were reviewing the documents and preserving the case.
Ethan had not been arrested.
No final legal consequence had been decided.
But his control over the evidence was gone.
Rebecca sent Clara one more message.
I am sorry I believed him.
Clara stared at it.
Rebecca had walked into Clara’s home while she was away.
She had helped label furniture.
She had accepted Ethan’s story.
But she had also been deceived.
Clara was not ready to forgive her.
She was ready to let facts separate guilt from manipulation.
She replied:
Tell investigators everything.
Then she placed the phone down.
Officer Reed asked whether Clara still wanted Ethan’s belongings removed from the house.
Samantha advised against touching anything until inventory photographs were complete.
Clara agreed.
Everything would be documented.
No revenge.
No destruction.
