Chapter 3 - The Address on the Application

The house had belonged to Clara before she met Ethan.

She purchased it at twenty-eight after years of working double shifts as a medical billing supervisor.

When they married, Ethan moved in.

He paid utilities occasionally.

He bought furniture.

He called the home “ours” whenever guests were present.

But his name had never been on the deed or mortgage.

Clara showed the officers the original closing records.

Officer Daniels nodded.

“This confirms ownership.”

Then Clara pulled out a photocopy of a loan application she had found in Ethan’s desk three days earlier.

Her address appeared beneath his name.

So did an estimated property value.

At the bottom, Ethan had checked a box claiming he owned the house free of any conflicting interest.

Officer Reed’s eyes narrowed.

“What was he borrowing money for?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

There was a second signature line.

Clara’s name had been written there.

The handwriting was not hers.

Daniels looked from the page to Clara.

“You believe this was forged?”

“I know it was.”

She showed them her real signature from the deed.

The differences were obvious.

Reed asked why she had not reported it immediately.

“I found it the same night Ethan told me he was flying to Denver for a work conference.”

Clara’s voice remained controlled.

“He was actually flying to Las Vegas to marry Rebecca.”

The officers exchanged a look.

A false property complaint was one problem.

A forged loan application was another.

Daniels asked whether Clara knew Rebecca.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

“Ethan’s coworker.”

Reed studied the wedding photograph again.

“How long has this been going on?”

Clara looked toward the dark hallway behind her.

“I thought six months.”

Her fingers tightened around the folder.

“Then I found a storage receipt that proved I was wrong.”

👉 Ethan and Rebecca had been preparing to take Clara’s home long before the Las Vegas ceremony.
