Chapter 2 - The Account He Couldn’t Touch

Officer Daniels asked Clara to explain the canceled-card alerts.

She kept one hand on the doorknob.

“At 2:14 this morning, Ethan tried to use three cards connected to my accounts.”

“Joint accounts?” Daniels asked.

“No.”

She removed another page from the folder.

The ownership records listed Clara as the sole account holder.

Ethan had been an authorized user on one card because she trusted him to buy household supplies.

The authorization ended the moment she saw the wedding photograph.

Officer Reed studied the timestamps.

“He reported being locked out at 7:05 this morning.”

“The locksmith finished at 6:42.”

Clara showed them the invoice.

Daniels frowned.

“That’s a narrow timeline.”

“He knew the locks were changed because the smart-lock app sent him an automatic notice.”

“Why did he still claim this was his residence?”

“Because he thinks saying something confidently makes it true.”

Reed looked toward the driveway.

“No vehicle registered to him?”

“His company car is in Las Vegas.”

“Clothes inside?”

“Some.”

“Mail?”

“Some.”

Clara did not evade the questions.

She answered each one calmly.

Then she handed them a copy of Ethan’s message from the previous evening.

I married Rebecca. Don’t embarrass yourself by making a scene. Pack your things before we return Monday.

Daniels read it twice.

“He told you to leave your own house?”

“Yes.”

“And then called police when you changed the locks?”

“Yes.”

Reed’s guarded expression shifted into quiet disbelief.

Daniels asked whether Ethan had ever contributed to the mortgage.

Clara opened another section of the folder.

“No. But that is not the only lie he told you.”

👉 The mortgage records showed Ethan had been secretly using Clara’s address to support a much larger deception.
