Chapter 11 - The Form Beneath the Insurance Papers
Clara’s attorney arrived forty minutes later.
Samantha Cole was a compact woman in a black coat who carried a legal pad and spoke without wasting words.
She reviewed the deed, Ethan’s messages, and Lorraine’s recorded call.
Then Clara described the insurance documents from eighteen months earlier.
“Do you still have copies?” Samantha asked.
“No. Ethan filed them.”
“Do you remember whether they were notarized?”
Clara closed her eyes.
A memory surfaced.
Ethan had invited Martin Pike over.
Martin sat at the kitchen table while Clara signed several pages.
He claimed he was witnessing her insurance election.
Martin stamped one page.
Samantha’s expression sharpened.
“A tax preparer is not automatically a notary.”
“He had a stamp.”
“Did you read the heading?”
“No.”
The admission hurt.
But Samantha did not shame her.
“That is what coercive paperwork depends on. Speed, trust, and distraction.”
She asked the officers whether they could note a suspected fraudulent property transfer.
Daniels explained that they would need records from the county recorder.
Samantha opened her laptop from the porch.
The public database loaded slowly.
Clara’s address appeared.
The original deed listed Clara alone.
Then another filing appeared from eighteen months earlier.
QUITCLAIM DEED.
Grantor: Clara Bennett Hale.
Grantee: Ethan Hale.
Clara stopped breathing.
The document claimed she had transferred the property to Ethan for ten dollars.
Samantha opened the scanned image.
Clara’s signature was on the final page.
But the legal description attached to it belonged to another parcel.
The filing was defective.
It should never have been accepted.
Yet Ethan had relied on it when calling police.
Officer Daniels stared at the screen.
“This may explain why he believed officers would remove you.”
Samantha shook her head.
