Chapter 18 - The Key That No Longer Worked

Lorraine returned just after noon.
This time, she came on foot.
She marched up the concrete walkway holding an old brass key.
Officer Daniels and Officer Reed were still completing reports on the porch.
Lorraine stopped when she saw them.
Then she recovered.
“My son asked me to collect his property.”
Clara remained behind the threshold.
“Not today.”
Lorraine held up the key.
“I have lawful access.”
“Try it,” Clara said.
Daniels looked at her but did not interfere.
Lorraine pushed the key into the new lock.
It did not turn.
She forced it harder.
Nothing.
Clara watched without expression.
“You changed it,” Lorraine hissed.
“Yes.”
“You had no right.”
“The deed says otherwise.”
Lorraine looked at the officers.
“She is keeping my son’s possessions.”
Samantha stepped forward.
“Mr. Hale’s documented personal property will be inventoried and made available through counsel.”
Lorraine’s face reddened.
“You think paperwork makes you powerful?”
Clara looked at the folder in her hands.
“For years, Ethan did.”
Daniels asked Lorraine whether she had filed the quitclaim deed using Patricia’s notary seal.
Lorraine’s eyes flickered.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Your signature and payment appear on the filing cover sheet.”
Lorraine stepped backward.
“This family gave Clara everything.”
Clara’s voice remained soft.
“No. You tried to take everything and call it family.”
Lorraine turned to leave.
Reed stopped her long enough to confirm identification and advise that detectives might contact her.
She walked away without the confidence she brought.

The useless key remained in her hand.
👉 Once the porch was quiet, Daniels asked Clara one final question that determined how Ethan’s original complaint would be recorded.
