Chapter 13 - The Witness
The person beside the kennel was Martin.
He didn’t touch Lily.
But he watched.
That mattered.
Diane placed Lily inside and latched the door.
Martin immediately stepped forward.
Even without perfect audio, his body language was clear.
He pointed at the kennel.
Then at Lily.
Then shook his head.
A nearby microphone captured fragments.
“…not part of this…”
Diane replied:
“I need pictures.”
Martin said something sharper.
Then he opened the kennel.
Diane slammed it shut again.
That footage did two things.
It implicated Martin because he had witnessed abuse and failed to report it.
But it also destroyed Diane’s claim that she had placed Lily there momentarily for safety.
She had wanted Lily distressed.
She wanted photographs.
Investigators later matched images from that afternoon to the guardianship file.
A photograph showed Lily crying behind metal bars.
The kennel itself had been cropped out.
The accompanying note described Lily as “frequently left confined and emotionally distressed while under Claire’s care.”
I stared at that sentence until the letters blurred.
Diane had created the suffering.
Photographed it.
Then attributed it to me.
That was the architecture of her entire plan.
Make Lily suffer.
Make me look responsible.
Make Ryan look incapable of protecting her.
Then arrive as the concerned grandmother offering stability.
But there was one thing Diane hadn’t anticipated.
Martin’s fear.
His secret recorder.
Charles’s letter.
The cloud backup.
Her own impatience.
Every person she manipulated had left behind another piece of the truth.
Then our attorney called.
Diane’s lawyer had proposed a meeting.
“She wants to negotiate,” he said.
“About what?”
“Financial restitution and cooperation.”
Ryan looked at me.
“Why now?”
Our attorney paused.
“Because the forensic accountants found where the missing money went.”
I expected another bank account.
I was wrong.
Diane had used part of it to purchase something.
