Chapter 6 - What the House Remembered

Ryan reached the router first.

“Don’t touch it.”

Diane stopped.

I had never seen genuine panic on her face before.

We contacted the security provider and preserved the account before accessing anything else.

That mattered now.

This wasn’t a family argument anymore.

We needed evidence preserved properly.

The backup archive restored gradually.

The first recovered clip was from six weeks earlier.

Diane entered the backyard carrying Lily.

She placed Lily on the grass.

Then she deliberately knocked over Lily’s bottle.

She photographed it.

Twenty minutes later, she texted Ryan:

Claire forgot to pack enough milk again.

Ryan covered his mouth.

Another recording.

Diane scattered toys across the kitchen before photographing the mess.

Another.

She removed food from Lily’s diaper bag.

Another.

She photographed a small bruise Lily had gotten learning to crawl, then typed something into her phone.

Every “incident” in Diane’s document had been staged or distorted.

I felt violated in a way I couldn’t explain.

She had turned our home into a set.

My daughter into a prop.

My motherhood into a lie.

Then a recording from three weeks earlier loaded.

Diane was speaking on the patio phone.

We couldn’t hear the person on the other end clearly.

But we heard Diane.

“I need Claire discredited first.”

Pause.

“Ryan will be easier after the audit.”

Ryan and I looked at each other.

“What audit?” I whispered.

The recording continued.

Diane lowered her voice.

“If they discover the transfers before I control Lily’s shares, we lose everything.”

We.

Not I.

Ryan replayed it.

“Who is ‘we’?”

Then the backup system restored another camera angle.

A man had visited Diane while Ryan and I were away.

Ryan recognized him instantly.

So did I.

And he was the last person either of us expected to see.

👉 Diane hadn’t built the scheme alone—the man helping her had access to Ryan’s company from the inside.
