Chapter 3 - The Story She Was Building

Ryan came outside carrying the documents.

He stopped when he saw Lily’s neck.

“Jesus Christ.”

His face collapsed.

He knelt beside us and gently touched Lily’s cheek.

Then he looked at his mother.

“What did you do?”

Diane straightened her cardigan.

Suddenly she became the composed woman I had known for six years.

“Your wife is hysterical.”

Ryan stared at her.

Diane continued.

“Claire leaves that child unattended. She forgets appointments. She’s unstable. I’ve been documenting it.”

My skin prickled.

“What are you talking about?”

Diane pointed toward the papers.

“I was protecting my granddaughter.”

“By chaining her inside a dog kennel?”

Her jaw tightened.

“That footage is misleading.”

I almost laughed.

Then Ryan handed me another sheet.

It was a typed list.

Dates.

Times.

Descriptions of supposed incidents.

“Claire left Lily without food.”

“Claire disappeared for two hours.”

“Claire screamed uncontrollably.”

None of it was true.

But beside several entries were photographs.

Lily crying.

A messy kitchen.

An overturned bottle.

A bruise on Lily’s knee from when she had started crawling.

Ordinary moments had been photographed and rewritten as evidence against me.

Then I recognized the dates.

Every photograph had been taken while Diane was babysitting.

Ryan saw it too.

“She created these situations,” he whispered.

Diane said nothing.

I remembered the deleted camera footage.

The missing backpack.

The strange messes I kept coming home to.

Diane hadn’t simply been hurting Lily.

She had been manufacturing a history in which I looked like the dangerous parent.

But one question still made no sense.

Ryan and I were happily married.

Even if Diane destroyed me, Ryan would still have custody of his own daughter.

So why prepare guardianship papers for herself?

I turned the final page.

There was another name written beside Ryan’s.

And when Ryan saw it, all the color drained from his face.

👉 Diane wasn’t planning to take Lily only from me—she had been preparing to remove her own son too.
