Chapter 18 - Beneath the Kennel
The handwriting belonged to Charles.
Ryan recognized it immediately.
We called our attorney before opening anything.
By that point, caution had become instinct.
The envelope contained a copy of an older note Charles had apparently hidden on the property.
It wasn’t another secret inheritance.
It wasn’t a miraculous piece of evidence that changed the case.
It was simpler.
Charles had written my name because he trusted me to understand what Ryan might not.
Diane loves ownership more than she understands love.
If that ever reaches the next generation, stop it.
I read the sentence twice.
Ryan sat down in the grass.
“He knew her.”
“Yes.”
“He really knew her.”
The note explained that Charles had once mistaken Diane’s control for devotion.
He had excused it.
Protected her reputation.
Cleaned up financial problems because he believed keeping the family together mattered more than confronting the truth.
He regretted it.
That was the cycle Diane expected Ryan to repeat.
Protect the Parker name.
Hide the scandal.
Excuse the mother.
Sacrifice everyone else to preserve the appearance of family.
Ryan folded the note carefully.
“I almost did that.”
“No.”
“I considered settling quietly.”
“For about a day.”
“That was enough.”
I touched his face.
“Then you chose Lily.”
He looked toward our daughter.
She was sitting on a blanket several yards away, laughing as she tried to catch bubbles floating through the sunlight.
The sound hit both of us.
Because that backyard had once held her cries.
Now it held her laughter.
Ryan stood.
Then he lifted the kennel door we had removed and carried it toward the disposal pile.
The security camera remained beneath the patio overhang.
I looked at it.
For months, I had thought of it as the object that caught Diane.
But that wasn’t quite right.
A camera didn’t save Lily.
Truth didn’t save itself.
People had to choose what to do once they saw it.
And we had one final choice left.
