Chapter 4 - The Second Target

The document described Ryan as an “absent and financially compromised father.”

He stared at his mother.

“Financially compromised?”

Diane looked away.

Ryan owned Parker Development, the real-estate company his father had founded.

The business was profitable.

Our home was paid for.

We had no serious debt.

At least, that was what we believed.

Ryan rushed inside and opened his laptop at the kitchen island while I kept Lily beside me.

He logged into the company accounts.

Then he stopped breathing.

Three transfers had been made from a family trust.

$75,000.

$110,000.

$240,000.

Ryan hadn’t authorized any of them.

The receiving account belonged to an LLC neither of us recognized.

Diane stood in the doorway.

Ryan slowly turned the laptop toward her.

“What is Parker Heritage Holdings?”

Her mouth tightened.

“You don’t understand the company.”

“I run the company.”

“You inherited it.”

That landed differently.

Ryan’s father, Charles, had died eleven months earlier.

Until then, Diane had spent decades acting like Parker Development belonged partly to her.

But Charles’s estate had transferred controlling ownership to Ryan.

Diane received a generous trust.

Apparently, it wasn’t enough.

Ryan opened the LLC registration.

Diane Parker.

Managing member.

The room went silent.

“You stole from the trust,” Ryan said.

“I moved family money.”

“Into your company.”

“For protection.”

“Protection from whom?”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Her.”

There it was.

The hatred I had felt for years but could never prove.

But money still didn’t explain Lily.

Then Ryan opened his father’s trust documents.

He scrolled.

Stopped.

Scrolled back.

“Claire…”

“What?”

He turned the screen toward me.

There was a clause neither of us remembered.

A clause triggered by Lily’s birth.

May you like

And suddenly Diane’s obsession with my daughter began to make horrifying sense.

👉 Charles Parker had tied something enormous to Lily—and Diane had spent nine months trying to get control of it.
