Chapter 8 - Charles’s Warning

The letter was four pages long.
Ryan read it first.
Halfway through, he had to stop.
I watched my husband’s eyes fill with tears.
Then he handed it to me.
Charles had discovered irregular transfers months before his death.
He suspected Diane had been moving money with help from someone inside Parker Development.
He had confronted her privately.
She denied everything.
Charles couldn’t yet prove the full amount, so he changed the trust.
He protected a portion of the company for his future grandchild and removed Diane’s ability to influence that share.
Then came the sentence that made the room disappear around me.
If Diane attempts to obtain guardianship or control of my grandchild, investigate every transaction involving Martin Cole.
Ryan leaned back.
“He knew.”
The attorney nodded.
“He suspected.”
There was a difference.
Charles hadn’t left us a magical answer.
He had left us a direction.
And that direction matched what the audit was beginning to uncover.
The letter also explained something painful.
Charles had delayed confronting Martin because he feared destroying the company before securing enough records.
Then his health declined rapidly.
He died before finishing what he started.
Ryan stared through the office window.
“All this time, I thought Mom hated Claire because she thought nobody was good enough for me.”
I squeezed his hand.
“She hated what Lily’s birth changed.”
The attorney shook his head.
“More accurately, she feared what Lily’s trust prevented.”
Control.
That was the word underneath everything.
Money gave Diane comfort.
Control gave her power.
Lily’s birth had taken part of that power permanently out of her hands.
Unless she could become Lily’s legal guardian.
Our attorney placed Charles’s letter into an evidence folder.
Then his assistant knocked.
“The accountants found something.”
A transaction ledger had been recovered from Martin’s company account.
One payment occurred two days after Lily was born.
Recipient: Parker Heritage Holdings.
Memo:
Phase II.
I stared at Ryan.
If Lily’s birth started Phase II…
“What was Phase I?”
The attorney’s expression darkened.

“We need to find out.”
👉 The scheme hadn’t begun when Diane put Lily in the kennel—it had begun before my daughter was even born.
