Chapter 7 - The Man at the Patio Table

“Martin.”

Ryan barely said the name.

Martin Cole was Parker Development’s longtime chief financial officer.

He had worked with Charles for nineteen years.

Ryan trusted him.

At Christmas, Martin held Lily and called himself “Uncle Marty.”

Now we were watching him sit across from Diane at our patio table.

The recording had no clear audio from that distance.

But Martin handed her a folder.

Diane handed him something smaller.

A flash drive.

Ryan immediately called the company’s outside attorney.

Then the independent accounting firm.

He didn’t accuse Martin.

He simply ordered access controls preserved and requested an emergency review.

Within hours, discrepancies began appearing.

Invoices to nonexistent consultants.

Inflated vendor payments.

Money routed through entities connected to Parker Heritage Holdings.

Diane’s transfers were only part of it.

Martin had apparently been hiding unauthorized transactions inside legitimate projects.

Ryan stared at the preliminary numbers.

“This could be over two million dollars.”

Diane laughed from the other side of the kitchen.

“You think Charles was innocent?”

Ryan looked up sharply.

“What does that mean?”

She smiled.

There was the old Diane again.

Confident.

Cruel.

“You worship your father because he died before you ever learned what he really thought of you.”

Ryan flinched.

I grabbed his hand.

Diane saw it.

Her smile widened.

“Ask your precious auditors why Charles changed the trust.”

That bothered me.

She wanted us looking at the amendment.

Why?

Ryan’s attorney called back twenty minutes later.

He had located the original estate file.

The amendment establishing Lily’s share contained a handwritten instruction from Charles requesting that a sealed letter be released if anyone ever challenged Lily’s ownership.

Nobody had challenged it before.

Diane had now done exactly that.

The attorney asked us to come to his office.

Diane heard him.

Her confidence vanished.

“No.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What’s in the letter, Mom?”

She whispered something I almost missed.

May you like

“He promised he destroyed it.”

👉 Charles had expected someone to come after Lily’s inheritance—and before he died, he had left behind the reason.
