Chapter 5 - Lily’s Inheritance

Charles had amended his trust three months before he died.

When Ryan’s first child was born, a protected share of Parker Development would transfer into a trust for that child.

Lily owned twenty-five percent of the family company.

Not someday.

Now.

Ryan remained trustee while she was a minor.

If Ryan became unable to serve, guardianship and financial control would be reviewed by an independent trustee and the court.

Diane had received nothing from that twenty-five percent.

I finally understood.

“You weren’t trying to save Lily from me.”

Diane’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t belong in this family.”

Ryan slammed his palm against the counter.

“Stop.”

But she kept staring at me.

“My husband built everything you enjoy. Then Charles became sentimental and handed millions to a baby because you happened to give birth to her.”

Millions.

I looked at Lily sitting against my chest.

She was playing with the button on my blouse, completely unaware.

Ryan’s voice shook.

“So you fabricated neglect allegations against Claire.”

Diane said nothing.

“And you started building a case against me.”

Still nothing.

“To become Lily’s guardian.”

“I was protecting Parker assets.”

I felt sick.

“She’s your granddaughter.”

“She is a Parker.”

“No,” I said. “She’s a child.”

For the first time, Diane lost control.

“And you think that makes you entitled to everything?”

She grabbed the stack of papers.

Ryan snatched them away.

Diane’s expression changed immediately.

She realized she had said too much.

But we still couldn’t prove the entire scheme.

Forged documents could be challenged.

The transfers could be investigated.

The kennel video proved cruelty.

None of it yet proved that Diane had deliberately manufactured incidents to frame me.

Then I remembered the deleted footage.

“Ryan.”

He looked at me.

“The camera system backs up to the cloud.”

Diane’s face went still.

Ryan slowly turned toward his mother.

She had deleted recordings from the app.

But she apparently hadn’t known about the secondary backup Charles had installed years earlier.

Diane ran for the router.

👉 Diane had spent months deleting what she thought was evidence—but the house had quietly kept another copy of everything.
