Chapter 14 - The House Diane Bought

The property was in Connecticut.

A six-bedroom estate purchased through Parker Heritage Holdings.

Diane had paid mostly cash.

Ryan stared at the listing photographs.

A pool.

Guesthouse.

Private drive.

And a child’s bedroom.

Pink walls.

A crib.

Stuffed animals.

My stomach turned.

“She already made a room for Lily.”

The purchase had closed five months earlier.

The guardianship petition had been drafted shortly afterward.

This wasn’t an impulsive grandmother making bad decisions.

She had planned for Lily to live there.

Without me.

Potentially without Ryan.

At the negotiation meeting, Diane sat across from us with two attorneys.

She never looked at Lily because Lily wasn’t there.

We would never bring her into that room.

Diane offered repayment of certain funds in exchange for what her attorney carefully called “a global family resolution.”

Ryan almost smiled.

“A family resolution?”

Her lawyer intervened.

“My client is prepared to surrender claims involving the child’s trust.”

“She never had legitimate claims,” our attorney replied.

Diane finally looked at me.

“What do you want, Claire?”

I thought about the kennel.

The chain.

Lily’s voice.

The photographs.

The lies.

“I want you to stop pretending this is something I did to you.”

Her lips tightened.

“You took my son.”

Ryan leaned forward.

“I’m sitting right here.”

Silence.

“You took my granddaughter.”

“She was never yours to take.”

Diane’s composure cracked.

“I built that family!”

“No,” Ryan said. “Dad built a company. Claire and I built our family.”

Diane pushed back from the table.

Then our attorney placed a photograph of the Connecticut nursery in front of her.

“You prepared this room before filing the guardianship petition.”

Diane stared at it.

For the first time, she had no explanation ready.

Then Ryan placed Charles’s letter beside it.

Her eyes filled.

Not with remorse.

With defeat.

But Diane still had one weapon left.

She turned to Ryan and whispered:

“Ask Claire why your father met with her alone before he died.”

Ryan slowly looked at me.

May you like

And I realized Diane knew about the one promise I had never told him.

👉 Charles had entrusted me with something before his death—and keeping that promise was about to test my marriage at the worst possible moment.
