Chapter 9 - Phase One

The audit took three days.

They were the longest three days of my life.

Diane was no longer welcome in our home.

Our attorney advised us to preserve everything and document all contact.

We also made sure Lily was never alone with her again.

Then the accountants called.

Phase I had started fourteen months earlier.

Before Lily’s birth.

Before Charles died.

Martin had created fake vendor contracts that redirected company money.

Diane’s LLC received portions of it.

But the largest discovery wasn’t the amount.

It was the timing.

Charles had scheduled an independent audit shortly before his health deteriorated.

That audit was canceled.

The cancellation appeared to come from Charles’s email.

Except metadata showed the message had originated from Martin’s office computer.

Ryan went silent.

“They forged Dad’s instruction.”

The accountant nodded.

“There’s more.”

After Charles died, Martin increased the transfers.

But when Lily was born and her twenty-five-percent trust activated, certain major transactions required additional reporting to the independent trustee.

Their freedom to move money narrowed.

That was Phase II.

Get control of Lily’s trust.

Suddenly everything aligned.

Discredit me.

Undermine Ryan.

Create a guardianship case.

Use Lily’s shares to restore financial control.

The kennel wasn’t the purpose.

It was one piece of a campaign designed to create images of a neglected, distressed child.

Except Diane’s cruelty had grown beyond staging.

She had started punishing Lily when nobody was watching.

Or when she thought nobody was watching.

Then Ryan received a text.

From Martin.

Need to talk privately. Your mother is lying to you.

Ryan showed me.

A second message arrived.

I can prove the kennel was her idea. Meet me alone.

I shook my head.

“No.”

Ryan agreed.

He forwarded everything to the attorney.

Martin sent one final message.

Ask Claire what Diane put in Lily’s backpack last Thursday.

My heart stopped.

The backpack.

We had checked the documents.

We hadn’t checked every seam.

Ryan brought it out.

Inside the lining, we felt something hard.

👉 Someone had hidden an object inside our baby’s backpack—and Martin knew exactly where we would find it.
