Chapter 11 - The Messages Kyle Never Expected Them to See
Heather’s phone contained screenshots of a group chat between Kyle, Susan, Rachel, and Heather.
At first, the messages discussed legal language.
How to describe Chloe’s “erratic behavior.”
How to stage concern.
How to convince Norman that his daughter was in danger.
Then the tone changed.
Rachel asked what would happen after the house sold.
Kyle answered privately, but Heather had photographed the conversation from Susan’s tablet.
KYLE: Once the wire clears, you and I leave. Mom and Heather can deal with Chloe.
RACHEL: You promised them shares.
KYLE: Promises kept them cooperative.
Another message followed.
RACHEL: What about Norman?
KYLE: He’ll look guilty once the false statement surfaces. Chloe may blame him.
Chloe looked at her father.
Norman’s face collapsed.
Kyle had not only stolen his savings.
He had planned to destroy their relationship.
Susan read the messages over Detective Ruiz’s shoulder.
“He did not mean that.”
Heather laughed through tears.
“He was abandoning us too.”
Susan shook her head.
“My son would never leave me.”
Chloe almost felt pity.
Susan had built Kyle into someone incapable of accountability.
Now she could not accept the man she created.
Detective Ruiz received an update from officers searching the resort area.
Rachel’s rental car had been found near a private airfield.
Kyle’s vehicle was nearby.
A small charter plane had filed a flight plan for Belize.
Departure was scheduled within the hour.
Rachel and Kyle were likely trying to leave before the title freeze and fraud reports reached federal databases.
Chloe’s attorney interrupted.
“The county has officially flagged the property documents. The sale cannot proceed.”
“And the loan?”
“Frozen.”
“What about Norman’s cashier’s check?”
“The bank confirms Kyle deposited it into an account controlled by Rachel. That account has also been frozen.”
Norman closed his eyes.
His money was not recovered yet.
But it was no longer disappearing.
Susan suddenly stood.
“You cannot stop that plane.”
Detective Ruiz looked at her.
“Why are you worried about the plane if you believe your son is innocent?”
Susan froze.
Heather answered for her.
“Because Kyle has the original recording.”
Susan turned toward her.
“No. Rachel has it.”
Heather shook her head.
“Kyle took it from the hotel safe.”
Chloe understood.
Each conspirator had created evidence against the others.
The recording was their insurance policy.
