Chapter 4 - The Man in Chloe’s Office
Chloe moved toward the hallway.
Susan stepped in front of her.
“You should calm down.”
Chloe did not slow.
“Move.”
“It might be better if we all wait for Kyle.”
Chloe’s eyes hardened.
“Move, Susan.”
Before Susan could answer, the office door opened.
A man in a navy suit emerged holding a leather document folder.
Chloe recognized him.
Evan Price was Kyle’s college friend and a recently licensed real-estate broker.
He froze when he saw Chloe.
“You’re home.”
“That appears to surprise everyone.”
Evan looked toward Susan.
Susan’s expression warned him not to speak.
Chloe held out her hand.
“Give me the folder.”
“These are Kyle’s documents.”
“This is my office.”
Evan tightened his grip.
Chloe raised her phone.
“You are being recorded inside my home while removing documents without my permission.”
He hesitated.
“Chloe, this isn’t what you think.”
“Then explain it.”
Evan glanced at the open front door.
Norman slowly stood behind Chloe.
The movement cost him effort, but he refused to remain kneeling.
Evan lowered his voice.
“Kyle said you authorized the sale.”
The room went silent.
“What sale?” Chloe asked.
“The house.”
Norman stared at him.
Susan closed her eyes.
Heather muttered, “Idiot.”
Chloe heard her.
Evan opened the folder as though documents might protect him.
“There is a buyer prepared to close quickly. Kyle said the proceeds would be transferred to a joint investment account.”
“My house is not for sale.”
“The listing agreement has your signature.”
“Forged.”
Evan’s face changed.
“He gave me a notarized authorization.”
“Who notarized it?”
Evan did not answer.
Chloe stepped closer.
“Who notarized my signature while I was in Denver?”
Heather spoke from behind the sofa.
“Kyle said you signed before you left.”
Chloe turned toward her.
“So you knew.”
Heather’s expression tightened.
“I heard him discussing it.”
Susan snapped, “Stop talking.”
Chloe immediately looked at Susan.
That command revealed more than Heather’s words had.
Susan knew the plan.
Perhaps she had helped build it.
Chloe held her hand out again.
“The folder.”
Evan finally surrendered it.
Inside were the forged listing contract, the loan documents, a limited power of attorney, and a copy of a wire-transfer instruction.
The destination account was not joint.
It was registered to a company Chloe had never heard of.
