Chapter 6 - The Lie About Her Mind
Norman stared at the document in horror.
“I didn’t read all of it.”
Chloe touched his arm.
“I know.”
“Kyle covered the top. He said I was confirming the cashier’s check.”
Susan smiled faintly.
“Convenient.”
Chloe turned on her.
“My father believed I was in custody. Your son used that fear to make him sign a false statement.”
“No one forced him.”
Heather nodded toward Norman.
“He signed it willingly.”
Norman’s shame returned.
Chloe refused to let it stay there.
“No. He signed under fraud.”
She studied the statement.
It claimed Chloe had become paranoid, aggressive, and incapable of managing money.
Attached was a petition for emergency conservatorship.
Kyle was asking the court to place her assets under his control.
The application included a physician’s letter.
Chloe recognized the name.
Dr. Martin Vale.
Kyle’s uncle by marriage.
A man who had never treated Chloe.
The plan became clear.
First, create a false crisis.
Then convince Norman that Chloe had been arrested.
Use his panic to obtain money and a damaging statement.
Submit forged medical evidence.
Gain emergency control of Chloe’s property.
Borrow against the house.
Sell it quickly.
Transfer the proceeds to Heather’s company.
By the time Chloe returned from Denver, Kyle would claim she was unstable and legally incapable of challenging him.
Susan watched Chloe assemble the pieces.
Her confidence began to weaken.
“You cannot prove Kyle intended any of that.”
Chloe lifted the folder.
“It is written down.”
“You’re interpreting paperwork emotionally.”
“I’m reading fraud.”
The front door remained open.
A neighbor walking a dog slowed outside.
Susan immediately lowered her voice.
“Close the door. The whole neighborhood can hear.”
Chloe looked toward the street.
For years, Susan had controlled situations through shame.
She feared witnesses more than consequences.
Chloe walked to the door.
Susan relaxed.
Then Chloe opened it wider.
“Let them hear.”
Heather’s face tightened.
Chloe called her attorney.
“I need an emergency injunction against a fraudulent property sale, a conservatorship petition filed under false evidence, and any transaction involving Desert Crown Holdings.”
Her attorney began asking questions.
Chloe looked at Norman’s trembling hands.
“And I need the police.”
Susan stepped forward.
“You will not call the police on my son.”
Chloe met her eyes.
