Chapter 7 - The Message Heather Could Not Hide

Heather’s phone vibrated on the coffee table.
She reached for it.
Chloe reached it first.
Heather lunged forward.
“Give me that.”
Chloe stepped back.
The screen was locked, but the notification was visible.
MOM: KEEP CHLOE AWAY FROM THE OFFICE UNTIL KYLE CONFIRMS THE WIRE.
Everyone looked at Susan.
Susan’s face became rigid.
Heather closed her eyes in frustration.
Norman whispered, “You planned this.”
Susan recovered quickly.
“That message proves nothing.”
“It proves you were coordinating with Heather.”
“I was trying to prevent a family argument.”
“By keeping me away from my own documents?”
Susan’s voice hardened.
“You have humiliated Kyle for years.”
“How?”
“You earn more than he does. You remind him that this house is yours. You never gave him equal authority.”
“I gave him a marriage. He wanted ownership.”
“You made him feel small.”
Norman stepped forward.
“So he stole from my daughter?”
Susan turned on him.
“You have always encouraged her to look down on my son.”
Norman’s face reddened.
“I treated Kyle like family.”
“You treated him like a charity case.”
Chloe saw where Kyle’s resentment came from.
Susan had fed it.
Every generous act became an insult.
Every boundary became cruelty.
Every success Chloe earned became something stolen from Kyle.
Heather snatched her phone from Chloe’s hand.
“You should have put his name on the house.”
“It was mine before we met.”
“You were married.”
“Marriage is not permission to commit fraud.”
Heather laughed bitterly.
“You think the law will care? The sale documents are already filed.”
Chloe’s attorney spoke through the phone.
“They have not closed. I’m filing notice with the county recorder now.”
Heather’s confidence disappeared.
“What?”
“The title will be frozen within minutes,” Chloe’s attorney continued. “The lender has also been notified that the application is disputed.”
Susan looked at Evan.
“Call Kyle.”
Evan shook his head.
“He stopped answering.”
Heather checked her phone.
“No signal from him either.”
Chloe studied them.
Kyle had used all three of them.
Now he had vanished.
Then Norman remembered something.
“He said he had to meet a woman at the resort.”
Chloe looked at him.
“What woman?”
“I heard him call her Rachel.”
Heather’s face drained of color.
Susan turned toward her daughter.
“You said Rachel was no longer involved.”
Chloe understood from their expressions that Rachel was not a banker.
May you like
She was someone they had deliberately hidden from her.
👉 Kyle had planned to flee with another woman—but Heather knew Rachel was carrying something far more valuable than money.
