Chapter 9 - The Partnership Begins to Collapse

Chloe gave the police the resort name.
Marco Ruiz, the responding detective, arrived with another officer fifteen minutes later.
He separated everyone.
Susan demanded an attorney.
Heather began crying.
Evan handed over the folder and claimed he believed the transaction was legitimate.
Norman gave his statement slowly, ashamed whenever he described the false detention call.
Detective Ruiz stopped him.
“Mr. Bennett, you were manipulated. You are not the suspect here.”
Norman looked toward Chloe.
She nodded.
For the first time that day, his shoulders lifted slightly.
Meanwhile, police contacted the resort.
Kyle had checked into a private suite under another name.
Rachel had joined him that morning.
But hotel security reported an argument.
Rachel left the suite carrying a metal briefcase.
Kyle followed her into the parking garage.
Neither had returned.
Chloe’s phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Kyle.
Everyone fell silent.
Detective Ruiz signaled for Chloe to answer on speaker.
“Kyle?”
His breathing was fast.
“Chloe, listen to me. Susan and Heather set this up.”
Susan’s head snapped toward the phone.
Heather whispered, “Coward.”
Kyle continued.
“They forged the documents. I found out this morning.”
Chloe looked at Susan.
Susan’s expression transformed from fear into fury.
“You told my father I was detained.”
A pause.
“I was trying to get emergency money.”
“For what?”
“To stop Rachel.”
“What does she have?”
“The trust papers and proof that she approved the loan.”
“Why would that threaten you?”
Kyle’s breathing changed.
He realized Chloe knew more than expected.
“Where are you?” she asked.
“I need you to meet me alone.”
“No.”
“Chloe, Rachel is dangerous.”
Detective Ruiz silently began tracing the call.
Kyle lowered his voice.
“She took everything. The money. The records. She is going to make it look like I acted alone.”
Heather laughed bitterly.
“You did act alone when you ran.”
Kyle heard her.
“You’re with them?”
“I’m in my house.”
“Our house.”
“No,” Chloe said. “That lie is over.”
Kyle’s voice turned cold.
“You think you’ve won because you found a few documents?”
“No. I think you’re frightened because Rachel has the one thing you cannot replace.”
Silence.
Chloe guessed.
“The recording.”
Kyle hung up.
Detective Ruiz looked at her.
“What recording?”
Chloe did not know yet.
But Susan did.

Her face had gone pale.
👉 Rachel possessed a recording of Kyle explaining the entire scheme—and Susan’s voice was on it too.
