Chapter 15 - The Husband Behind the Glass

Kyle looked smaller behind the detention-room glass.

His expensive confidence had disappeared.

He picked up the phone.

Chloe remained standing for a moment before sitting across from him.

“You came.”

“I wanted to see whether you could finally tell the truth.”

Kyle smiled weakly.

“Rachel designed the loan.”

“You signed the documents.”

“Mom suggested the conservatorship.”

“You filed it.”

“Heather forged the notarization.”

“You brought her my signature.”

His smile vanished.

Chloe continued.

“You keep describing other people’s actions as though you were standing nearby.”

Kyle leaned closer to the glass.

“I can help convict them.”

“They are already helping convict you.”

His eyes hardened.

“Your father signed the statement.”

“Because you lied to him.”

“He should have read it.”

Chloe felt the last fragment of grief for her marriage disappear.

There was no remorse in Kyle.

Only resentment that his victims had not protected themselves better.

“Why did you believe I would accept this?” she asked.

Kyle laughed.

“Because you always fix everything quietly.”

Chloe said nothing.

“You paid Heather’s rent when she lost her job. You covered Mom’s medical bills. You rescued your father’s shop when the lease increased. You never wanted anyone embarrassed.”

He leaned back.

“I knew you would discover the loan eventually. But I thought you would pay it off, divorce me privately, and protect your reputation.”

Chloe understood.

Her kindness had taught Kyle the wrong lesson.

He believed compassion meant weakness.

“You thought I would protect the people who hurt my father.”

“I thought you would protect yourself from scandal.”

“No.”

Kyle studied her face.

“What changed?”

Chloe remembered Norman on the floor.

Heather’s hand striking his.

Susan watching.

The crushed basket carrying her mother’s recipe.

“You touched the one person who never asked me for anything.”

Kyle’s confidence faltered.

“Chloe—”

“You stole his retirement. You used his fear. You tried to make me believe he betrayed me.”

“I can return the money.”

“It is already frozen.”

“I can testify against Rachel.”

“You will testify because the court orders you to.”

His jaw clenched.

“What do you want?”

Chloe looked directly at him.

“For the first time in your life, I want you to receive exactly what you earned.”

She placed her wedding ring beside the phone.

Then she stood.

Kyle struck the glass with his palm.

“Chloe!”

May you like

She did not turn around.

👉 Kyle finally lost control—but the courtroom would reveal whether Susan and Heather were willing to sacrifice him to save themselves.
