Chapter 8 - The Woman at the Resort
Rachel Mercer was a senior loan officer at the private bank reviewing the fraudulent home-equity application.
She was also Kyle’s former girlfriend.
Chloe had heard the name only once before.
Two years earlier, Heather mentioned that Rachel had returned to Scottsdale.
Kyle claimed he had not spoken to her since college.
Now Susan’s reaction exposed the lie.
“How long has Kyle been seeing her?” Chloe asked.
Susan looked away.
Heather answered reluctantly.
“Six months.”
Norman sat down heavily.
Chloe felt no surprise.
The financial betrayal had already emptied the marriage of meaning.
The affair simply explained the destination.
“What is Rachel carrying?”
Heather pressed her lips together.
Chloe’s attorney remained on the line.
“I can request the bank preserve all records involving Rachel,” she said.
Heather looked at Susan.
Susan’s voice became sharp.
“Do not say another word.”
Chloe stepped closer.
“Kyle has abandoned you too.”
“He would never,” Susan said.
“He stopped answering.”
“He is protecting himself.”
“Exactly.”
Heather’s anger rose.
“He promised I would get twenty percent.”
Susan snapped, “Heather!”
The confession fell into place.
Heather’s company was receiving the house proceeds because Kyle did not want the transfer traced directly to him.
Heather expected a share.
Susan expected Kyle to buy her a new home.
Rachel controlled the loan approval and would receive the largest payment.
The rest would move offshore.
“What does Rachel have?” Chloe asked again.
Heather’s eyes filled with panic.
“The original trust documents.”
Chloe went still.
“What trust?”
Susan sat down.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
Kyle’s late father had created a family trust before his death.
Susan told everyone it contained almost nothing.
That was another lie.
The trust owned mineral rights to land outside Phoenix—rights recently valued at more than twelve million dollars.
Kyle and Heather were equal beneficiaries.
But the trust included a strict morality and fraud clause.
Any beneficiary convicted of financial crimes could lose his share.
Kyle wanted Chloe declared incompetent and blamed for the forged loan.
If authorities believed Chloe had created the scheme, Kyle could preserve his inheritance while stealing her assets.
Rachel carried the original trust agreement because Kyle intended to alter the beneficiary records after leaving the country.
Chloe looked at Susan.
“You were willing to destroy me so your children could keep that money.”
Susan’s answer was barely a whisper.
“It belonged to our family.”
Norman stood beside Chloe.
“She was your family.”
Susan did not look at him.

“No,” she said. “She was Kyle’s opportunity.”
