Chapter 14 - The Shame That Was Never Norman’s
After police removed Susan, Heather, and Evan for further questioning, the house became painfully quiet.
The broken food still covered the floor.
Norman bent down to collect the basket.
Chloe stopped him.
“Leave it.”
“I made a mess.”
“No. They did.”
“I should have known Kyle was lying.”
“He told you your daughter was in danger.”
“I gave him everything.”
“You were trying to save me.”
Norman looked at the mark on his hand.
“I let that woman treat me like I was nothing.”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“You were afraid that fighting back would make things worse for me.”
He looked at her.
She understood him completely.
Norman had spent his life avoiding conflict.
After Chloe’s mother died, he raised his daughter alone while running a repair shop six days a week.
He never shouted.
Never complained.
Never asked Chloe for money.
When Kyle claimed Chloe was detained, Norman acted immediately because protecting her had always been the center of his life.
Kyle knew that.
He exploited it.
Chloe took the dirty rag and dropped it into the trash.
“You are not cleaning one more thing in this house today.”
Norman’s voice broke.
“I brought breakfast because I thought you might come home.”
Chloe looked at the eggs and sauce.
It was the same breakfast Norman made every year on her birthday.
Homemade tortillas.
Eggs.
Bacon.
Mole sauce from her mother’s recipe.
Susan had called it filth.
Heather had thrown it onto the floor.
Chloe hugged her father.
For several seconds, Norman stood rigid.
Then he held her tightly.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
“I signed that paper.”
“And you told the truth when it mattered.”
The doorbell rang.
Chloe’s attorney had arrived with emergency court orders.
The house sale was blocked.
The loan application was suspended.
The conservatorship petition had been rejected because its supporting evidence was fraudulent.
Most importantly, a judge authorized the immediate preservation of every account connected to Kyle and Rachel.
Norman’s savings had been located.
The money could be returned after the criminal process began.
Norman sat down.
Relief shook through him.
But Chloe knew the most difficult confrontation was still coming.
Kyle had requested to speak with her from custody.
