Chapter 16 - The Family Turns on Itself
The criminal hearings began two months later.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The audio recording.
Heather’s messages.
The forged power of attorney.
The false medical letter.
The intercepted sale.
The bank applications.
Norman’s cashier’s check.
Rachel accepted a plea agreement first.
She admitted approving fraudulent documents and attempting to move the money offshore.
In exchange for cooperation, she received a reduced sentence.
Heather followed.
She confessed to false notarization, conspiracy, and receiving stolen funds through Desert Crown Holdings.
Her attorney argued that Kyle and Susan pressured her.
Susan blamed Rachel.
Then Heather blamed Susan.
Kyle blamed everyone.
The family that once sat together on Chloe’s sofa, confident that she could be controlled, tore itself apart under oath.
Susan’s most damaging moment came when prosecutors played the recording of her saying:
“Divorce gives Chloe time. Incapacity gives Kyle control.”
She claimed she was speaking hypothetically.
Then investigators introduced her handwritten list of Chloe’s assets.
Beside the house, company shares, and investment accounts, Susan had written:
AVAILABLE AFTER ORDER.
Susan lowered her head.
Kyle received the longest sentence because he organized the fraud, stole Norman’s money, forged Chloe’s identity, and filed the false conservatorship petition.
Rachel and Susan also received prison sentences.
Heather served a shorter term but lost her notary commission, her business, and her claim to the family trust.
The trust’s fraud clause was enforced.
Kyle and Heather lost their inheritance.
The twelve-million-dollar property interest passed to a charitable foundation established by their late father.
None of them received the fortune they had destroyed Chloe’s family to protect.
Evan avoided prison after proving he did not know the signatures were forged, but he lost his real-estate license for failing to verify the transaction.
Dr. Vale lost his medical license and faced separate charges for creating the false evaluation.
Norman’s forty-eight thousand dollars was returned in full.
The court also awarded Chloe damages and legal fees.
When the verdicts were announced, Susan looked toward Chloe.
She expected satisfaction.
Chloe gave her none.
She simply took Norman’s hand and walked out.
Justice did not need a smile.
