Chapter 1 - The Slap Chloe Was Never Supposed to See

Heather’s palm struck the back of Norman’s hand before he could pick up the broken glass.
The sharp sound cut through the living room.
Norman jerked backward on one knee. His elbow hit the crushed food basket, sending eggs, bacon, salsa, and dark sauce farther across the polished hardwood floor.
“Clean it properly,” Heather said.
She looked down at the sixty-seven-year-old man with a bunch of grapes in one hand and a contemptuous smile on her face.
Norman lowered his head.
“I’m trying.”
Susan watched from the gray sofa with her arms folded.
Neither woman noticed the front door opening behind them.
Chloe stood in the doorway, one hand gripping her rolling suitcase.
She had returned from her business trip a day early.
For one frozen second, she could not understand what she was seeing.
Her father was kneeling on the floor of her own home.
His plaid shirt was stained with sauce.
A dirty rag trembled in his hand.
The breakfast he had apparently brought had been smashed around him.
Then Chloe saw the mark beginning to rise across the back of his hand.
Her suitcase slipped from her fingers.
It crashed onto the hardwood.
Heather turned.
The smugness vanished from her face.
Chloe crossed the room so quickly that Heather barely had time to lift her hand again.
Chloe caught her wrist and forced it down.
“Touch him again.”
Her voice was quiet.
That frightened Heather more than screaming would have.
Susan stood from the sofa.
“Chloe, you’re misunderstanding—”
Chloe released Heather and dropped beside Norman.
She gently removed the rag from his trembling fingers.
“What happened?”
Norman avoided her eyes.
“I didn’t want trouble.”
Chloe looked from him to the shattered dishes.
Then Norman gripped her wrist and pulled her closer.
His lips trembled.
“Kyle said you were detained.”
Chloe slowly raised her eyes toward Susan.
May you like
Susan took one involuntary step backward.
👉 Chloe had never been detained—and the lie her husband told Norman was only the first part of a much larger betrayal.
