Chapter 3 - The House Kyle Never Owned

Chloe’s home had belonged to her before she met Kyle.
She bought it at twenty-nine after selling her first interior-design company.
The deed had always remained in her name.
When she and Kyle married four years later, he moved in with two suitcases and a promise that he wanted nothing from her except a life together.
For the first two years, he seemed sincere.
He cooked dinner when she worked late.
He drove Norman to medical appointments.
He called Susan every Sunday and tolerated Heather’s constant demands for money.
Then Chloe’s business began earning more.
Kyle changed slowly.
He started asking why the house was not in both their names.
He complained that Chloe “controlled everything.”
He wanted access to her company accounts.
When she refused, he accused her of planning to leave him.
Chloe believed insecurity was driving him.
She did not realize greed was.
Now she looked at Susan.
“Why is Kyle at the bank?”
Susan shrugged.
“You should ask him.”
“I’m asking you.”
“He’s handling financial matters.”
“What financial matters?”
Susan’s confidence returned.
“You’ve been away. Someone had to act responsibly.”
Chloe unlocked her phone and checked her banking application.
Her personal accounts appeared normal.
Then she opened the email connected to the house.
There were twelve unread security alerts.
All sent during her flight home.
PASSWORD RESET REQUESTED.
NEW DOCUMENT UPLOADED.
LOAN APPLICATION UNDER REVIEW.
Chloe’s chest tightened.
She opened the latest message.
A home-equity loan for six hundred thousand dollars had been submitted in her name.
The electronic signature looked like hers.
It was not.
The application included a scanned copy of her driver’s license, tax returns, and property deed.
Documents kept inside the locked cabinet in her home office.
Only Chloe and Kyle knew the code.
Norman saw her expression.
“What is it?”
Chloe looked toward the hallway leading to her office.
“Someone applied for a loan against my house.”
Susan’s face remained carefully blank.
Heather looked toward the front door.
Chloe noticed both reactions.
“Did Kyle forge my signature?”
Susan lifted her chin.
“A husband cannot steal from his own wife.”
“That is not how the law works.”
“He said you agreed.”
“I did not.”
Heather stepped behind the sofa.
Chloe kept recording.
“Where are the original documents?”
Nobody answered.
Then a sound came from the guest-room hallway.
A drawer closing.
Chloe turned.
