Chapter 1 - The Scar at the Barbecue

Vanessa grabbed Harper Bellamy’s plaid sleeve with both hands and yanked.
Fabric tore across Harper’s shoulder.
Her body twisted from the force.
The paper plate in her hand crashed onto the wet stone patio, sending potato salad and grilled corn across Vanessa’s expensive sandals.
But no one looked at the food.
Everyone stared at the thick burn-and-surgical scar exposed across Harper’s upper arm and shoulder.
Vanessa recoiled with theatrical disgust.
“Cover that disgusting mess!”
Nervous laughter moved through the backyard.
Harper ripped her arm free and pulled the torn fabric against her chest.
Her face burned with humiliation.
She refused to cry.
“Touch me again, and we’re done.”
Behind them, Owen Maddox stood beside the grill in a formal black Navy dress uniform.
The metal spatula in his hand slipped from his fingers.
It struck the patio with a sharp crack.
Owen’s face lost all color.
He stepped forward.
Vanessa scoffed and reached toward Harper again.
“Vanessa. Back off.”
His voice silenced the entire yard.
Harper slowly lowered the torn fabric.
Owen stared at the scar without touching her.
His breathing became uneven.
“Khost Province… Raven Three?”
Harper’s eyes snapped toward him.
Owen straightened, brought his heels together, and raised a precise salute.
“Major Bellamy… you saved my men.”
Vanessa’s hand fell away.
Harper stood frozen.
