Chapter 35 - THE SIEGE AT THE LAKE

Dane’s men attacked from the water and the wooded road at the same time.

Harper moved Caleb, Emma, and Vanessa into the underground medical room while Owen and the investigators secured the tunnel entrances.

Mercer remained conscious.

Vanessa held pressure against his wound.

“You don’t get to die before Caleb decides what to do with you,” she said.

Mercer almost smiled.

Harper found an old radio system built into the safe room.

The exterior antenna still worked.

She contacted the state command post and reported the attack.

A voice answered, ordering them to surrender to approaching tactical officers.

Grace grabbed the radio.

“That is not our commander.”

The line went dead.

Dane had compromised the response network.

Smoke began filling the main tunnel.

“They’re forcing us toward the lake exit,” Owen said.

Harper examined the original construction plans.

A third passage led beneath the boathouse to an emergency hatch twenty yards offshore.

“They won’t expect us to go into the water.”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“She can’t swim well.”

“I can carry her,” Harper said.

The scar across her shoulder tightened at the thought of cold water and trapped corridors.

Owen noticed.

“You don’t have to be the one.”

“Yes, I do.”

Not because she was the only capable person.

Because Emma trusted her enough to remain calm.

They entered the narrow passage.

Behind them, Dane’s men breached the medical room.

Owen fired two controlled shots to slow them, then sealed the steel door.

The passage ended at a submerged hatch.

Harper tied a rescue line around Emma and explained exactly what would happen.

“You’ll be underwater for five seconds.”

“What if I get scared?”

“You can be scared and still keep moving.”

Emma nodded.

Harper opened the hatch.

Lake water rushed around their legs.

She pulled Emma through first, then surfaced beneath the boathouse dock.

Caleb followed with Grace. Vanessa and Mercer emerged next. Owen came last.

They moved silently beneath the dock while armed men crossed above them.

A voice called from the shore.

“Major Bellamy.”

Marcus Dane stood near the boathouse holding a remote trigger.

“The safe room contains enough fuel to destroy every record beneath the property.”

Harper climbed onto the far side of the dock, keeping the children hidden.

“Then why haven’t you detonated it?”

“Because Vale’s ledger is still down there.”

“You don’t know that.”

Dane smiled.

“Neither do you.”

Harper saw Owen moving through the water behind him.

She kept Dane talking.

“You chose Dylan because he was weak.”

“I chose him because Vanessa was predictable. Pride is easier to purchase than loyalty.”

Vanessa heard every word from beneath the dock.

Her face changed.

Dane continued.

“She believed any story that made her more important than her sister.”

Harper watched Vanessa absorb the truth without defending herself.

Sirens approached from the distant road.

Dane lifted the trigger.

Owen surged from the water and struck his arm.

The device flew across the dock.

Dane drew a pistol.

Vanessa climbed from beneath the dock and drove her shoulder into him before he could aim at Harper.

They crashed against the railing.

Dane grabbed Vanessa by the throat.

Harper pulled him away.

The three struggled on the wet boards.

Dane slipped, struck the railing, and fell into the lake.

He surfaced and reached for the pistol floating nearby.

Caleb kicked it beyond his reach.

State officers surrounded the shoreline.

Dane was dragged from the water and arrested.

Minutes later, the fuel charges beneath the house were disarmed.

Mercer was transported to surgery.

Vanessa sat wrapped in a blanket beside Caleb.

“You could have been killed,” he said.

“I know.”

“Why did you do it?”

She looked toward Harper.

“Because for once, I saw someone I loved in danger and didn’t ask what protecting them would cost me.”

Harper heard her.

May you like

It did not erase the past.

But it was the first proof that Vanessa’s apology might become something more than words.
