Chapter 13 - Elaine’s Message

Harper’s phone vibrated.

The call came from Elaine’s assisted-living nurse.

“Ms. Bellamy, your mother asked me to send you something if there was a disagreement about the lake house.”

A video arrived.

Elaine sat in a wheelchair beneath a knitted blanket.

Her voice was weak but clear.

“Harper, if Vanessa says I gave her full authority, that is not true.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The video continued.

“I agreed the property could be sold only if both daughters approved and the proceeds entered a care trust monitored by an independent attorney.”

Elaine paused to breathe.

“Dylan brought papers while I was medicated. I refused to sign.”

Harper’s eyes hardened.

Vanessa whispered, “Mom was confused.”

The nurse’s voice could be heard off camera asking Elaine to state the date and location.

She did.

She also named the attorney who held the valid directive.

Elaine looked into the camera.

“Harper, I am sorry I stayed silent when your father lied about your service. I thought keeping peace protected the family. It protected the cruelty instead.”

Harper’s breath caught.

“I know what happened to your shoulder was honorable, even if I was never allowed to know every detail.”

The message ended.

No one in the backyard spoke.

Harper had waited years to hear her mother acknowledge the truth.

She received it while standing with her sleeve torn open.

Vanessa lowered herself into a patio chair.

“Mom chose you.”

Harper shook her head.

“This is not about choosing.”

“It always is with you.”

“No. It was with Dad.”

The resemblance between Vanessa and Walter had never been clearer.
