Chapter 2 - The Woman Nobody Invited

Harper had almost skipped the barbecue.

Vanessa called three times that morning.

“You need to come,” she insisted. “Mom’s friends already think you hate this family.”

Harper did not hate them.

Hate required energy she no longer wanted to spend.

She simply knew how every gathering ended.

Vanessa displayed her renovated house.

Dylan bragged about promotions.

Their mother praised grandchildren and vacation homes.

Then someone asked Harper why she still dressed like she was working at a hardware store.

She wore the plaid shirt because the loose fabric covered her shoulder.

The scar tightened in summer heat.

Sleeveless clothing exposed it.

Tight clothing irritated the graft.

Harper had learned to choose comfort over explanations.

Vanessa interpreted that as failure.

She believed Harper had spent several unsuccessful years in the Army before returning home without a husband, children, or impressive career.

That was the story their father had told.

Harper had served in logistics.

Harper had suffered an accident.

Harper had become unstable after returning.

No one asked why military officers still sent her Christmas cards.

No one asked why she received calls she took outside.

No one asked why her medical records were protected.

At the barbecue, Dylan handed Harper a paper plate without looking at her.

“Try not to disappear before the family photo.”

Vanessa glanced at Harper’s shirt.

“You could have made an effort.”

“I am dressed.”

“You look like someone hired to repair the fence.”

Harper ignored her.

Then a child spilled lemonade against Harper’s sleeve.

The wet fabric clung to the uneven scar beneath it.

Vanessa noticed the outline.

Her expression hardened.

“What is that?”

Harper stepped away.

“Nothing you need to touch.”

May you like

Vanessa followed.

👉 Harper had survived an operation her own government buried—but she was about to discover someone at the barbecue had been searching for her for years.
