Chapter 14 - Dylan Breaks
Dylan looked toward the house.
Then the side gate.
Owen noticed.
“Do not leave with those documents.”
Dylan’s shoulders dropped.
“I did not forge Elaine’s signature.”
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Dylan.”
He continued.
“The notary handled it.”
“You told me it was legal.”
“You told me Harper would challenge everything.”
“Because she always does.”
Harper stepped closer.
“Who wrote the power of attorney?”
Dylan rubbed his face.
“My business partner drafted it from an old template.”
Vanessa stood.
“You said the hospital signature was enough.”
“You said your mother would not remember.”
The family recoiled.
Vanessa’s expression became wild.
“That is not what I meant.”
Dylan laughed bitterly.
“It is exactly what you meant.”
Their marriage had depended on shared superiority.
Now each tried to survive by blaming the other.
Dylan admitted they needed money.
His business had lost several clients.
The barbecue, house, cars, and private-school tuition were maintained through debt.
The lake property sale would cover everything.
Vanessa knew.
She proposed using Elaine’s care as the reason.
Harper looked around at the expensive patio.
The gold-trimmed dress.
The catered buffet.
The imported wine.
Vanessa tore her sister’s sleeve to protect an image already collapsing.
“How much debt?” Harper asked.
Dylan hesitated.
“Almost six hundred thousand.”
Vanessa looked at the guests as if their judgment were the true tragedy.
Owen’s voice became quiet.
“You humiliated a wounded veteran to hide a financial problem.”
Vanessa glared at him.
“You don’t know this family.”
Owen looked at Harper’s scar.
