Chapter 9 - The Stories Told to the Children

Caleb looked at Vanessa.
“You said Aunt Harper was dangerous.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I said she had problems after the military.”
“You told us never to be alone with her.”
Harper went completely still.
She had not known that.
Caleb continued.
“You said her scar happened because she lost control during training.”
Vanessa glanced toward the guests.
“This family does not need to discuss private matters publicly.”
“You pulled her shirt off in front of everyone,” Caleb said.
The sentence landed with more force than shouting.
Dylan put down his drink.
“Caleb, stay out of this.”
“No.”
The teenager moved closer to Harper.
Not touching her.
Simply standing beside her.
His younger sister, Emma, followed.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“Both of you come inside.”
Neither moved.
Owen watched Harper’s face.
The public salute had shocked her.
The children standing beside her frightened her in a different way.
She did not want them caught inside adult guilt.
“Your mother believed what she was told,” Harper said.
Vanessa looked at her sharply.
Even now, Harper softened the truth.
Caleb shook his head.
“She kept telling it.”
Harper could not deny that.
Aunt Carol wiped her eyes.
“Walter taught all of us to treat Harper like she had betrayed the family.”
Dylan asked, “Why would he do that?”
Carol answered quietly.
“Because she became something he could not control.”
Owen understood immediately.
He had seen commanding officers resent subordinates who surpassed them.
Walter did the same to his daughter.
