Chapter 11 - Why Harper Was Invited

The barbecue invitation had been unusually persistent.

Vanessa needed Harper physically present.

The sale documents included an acknowledgment stating that all heirs had been informed and raised no objection.

Dylan planned to photograph Harper at the gathering and later claim she attended a family meeting about the property.

If challenged, Vanessa would say Harper refused to sign because of emotional instability.

The torn sleeve had not been planned.

But the humiliation served the same purpose.

Make Harper look volatile.

Trigger a confrontation.

Record her anger.

Then use it to question her judgment.

Harper saw the phone mounted near the outdoor speaker.

Its camera faced the patio.

“Are you recording this?” she asked.

Dylan moved toward the device.

Owen stepped into his path.

“Leave it.”

Dylan stopped.

“This is private property.”

Harper looked around.

“The camera is pointed directly at where Vanessa told me to stand.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“It records the entire backyard for security.”

Caleb spoke.

“It wasn’t there yesterday.”

Dylan’s face tightened.

Owen examined the phone without touching it.

A red indicator showed active recording.

Harper looked at Vanessa.

“You wanted me angry on camera.”

“I wanted you to stop interfering with Mom’s care.”

“You forged her signature.”

“No.”

“Then let the attorney and police examine it.”

Vanessa’s confidence faltered.

She had expected Harper to leave humiliated.

She had not expected a retired commander, two teenagers, and dozens of guests to witness the documents.

Harper photographed every page.

Then she emailed the images to her attorney.

Dylan reached for the folder.

Harper closed it firmly against her chest.

“No.”

👉 Vanessa had tried to manufacture evidence against Harper—but her own camera had captured every word of the confession.
