Chapter 18 - The Nephew at the Gate

Harper reached the side gate before Caleb called her name.
She stopped.
The teenager stood several feet away.
“Can I still know you?”
Harper’s anger softened.
“You do know me.”
“No. I know what Mom said.”
He looked toward the patio.
“She lied about you my whole life.”
“She repeated what she chose to believe.”
“Is that different?”
Harper considered the question.
“Sometimes. Not always.”
Caleb looked at her scar.
“Does it hurt?”
“Yes.”
“Every day?”
“Most days.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I laughed once when Mom called you Frankenstein.”
Harper remembered.
He had been nine.
Vanessa laughed first.
Caleb followed because children learned where approval lived.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“I know.”
“Does that mean you forgive me?”
“You were a child.”
“What about now?”
“Now you decide what kind of man you become.”
The same standard Harper applied to herself.
Not perfection.
Choice.
Caleb asked whether he could visit Elaine with her the next day.
Harper nodded.
Emma came through the gate carrying a clean cardigan.
She held it out.
“For your shoulder.”
Harper took it but did not put it on.
Not because the scar no longer hurt.
Because she no longer wanted to hide it for Vanessa’s comfort.
Owen approached slowly.
The other guests remained behind.
“I contacted Reyes,” he said.
Harper’s breathing stopped.
“He wants to speak with you.”
She looked at the challenge coin in her palm.
“Now?”

“He has been waiting fifteen years.”
👉 Harper had spent years believing the rescue ended in fire—but one phone call would finally show her what survived.
