Chapter 6 - The Man She Carried

Dylan lifted his drink.

“Come on. People exaggerate military stories all the time.”

Owen turned toward him.

“Petty Officer Matthew Reyes weighed two hundred and ten pounds in full gear.”

Dylan’s grin faded.

“Major Bellamy dragged him through burning fuel with one functional arm.”

The guests became still.

Owen continued.

“Reyes had a wife and a six-month-old daughter.”

Harper’s fingers tightened around her torn sleeve.

She remembered the baby photograph taped inside Reyes’s helmet.

She remembered thinking that someone had to get him home.

“He survived,” Owen said.

A small breath escaped Harper.

She had never known.

Owen saw her reaction.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“All three men survived.”

Harper looked down.

For fifteen years, she had lived with uncertainty.

The official reports she received were incomplete.

Names were redacted.

She knew people had been evacuated.

She did not know who made it.

Owen stepped closer, stopping at a respectful distance.

“Reyes walked his daughter down the aisle last year.”

Harper’s face changed.

The humiliation in her eyes gave way to something raw and disbelieving.

“He can walk?”

“With a cane.”

A tear formed.

Harper turned her face before it fell.

Vanessa looked irritated rather than moved.

“If this were true, why has nobody ever heard of it?”

Owen answered without taking his eyes off Harper.

“Because some people serve without turning sacrifice into entertainment.”

The guests who had laughed lowered their drinks.

Dylan looked toward the ground.

Harper pulled the torn fabric over her shoulder again.

She wanted to leave.

Owen recognized the movement.

“You don’t have to prove anything to them.”

Harper looked at Vanessa.

“I stopped trying years ago.”
