Chapter 19 - The Men From Raven Three

Owen placed the call on video.

A man in his late forties appeared on the screen.

He stood with a cane beside a wedding photograph.

“Major Bellamy?”

Harper could not answer immediately.

Matthew Reyes smiled through tears.

“I knew you were too stubborn to die.”

Harper laughed once.

The sound surprised everyone.

Reyes turned the camera toward the photograph.

A young bride stood beside him.

“My daughter, Elena.”

The baby from the helmet photograph.

Grown.

Married.

Alive because her father came home.

Another face entered the video.

Clark.

Then Mason.

The three men crowded around the screen like younger versions of themselves.

They thanked Harper.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Reyes understood.

“You don’t want thanks.”

“I want to know what happened after I left.”

So they told her.

The surgeries.

The rehabilitation.

The nightmares.

The children born later.

The careers rebuilt.

The memorial held for Harper every year.

Harper listened until her knees weakened.

Owen pulled a patio chair closer without touching her.

She sat.

Vanessa watched from the distance.

For once, she did not interrupt.

Reyes saw the torn shirt.

“What happened?”

Harper glanced toward Vanessa.

“Family misunderstanding.”

Owen almost objected.

Harper continued.

“It is being corrected.”

She did not protect Vanessa from consequences.

She simply refused to let Vanessa occupy the moment.

Reyes invited Harper to their next reunion.

She agreed.

After the call ended, Owen saluted again.

This time, Caleb and Emma watched with understanding.

Harper returned the salute.

Not as a woman being discovered.
