Chapter 1 - The Cake on the Carpet

“Don’t call me Grandma.”

Madeline’s black flat struck the underside of the white ceramic plate before anyone could stop her.

The plate flew from four-year-old Luke’s hands.

Blackberry cobbler spun through the air, splattering across Brandon’s blue shirt, the cream carpet, and the legs of the wooden coffee table.

Luke dropped onto both knees.

For one stunned second, the crowded living room went silent.

Then his face crumpled.

“Mommy… what did I do?”

Nicole rushed forward, fell beside him, and pulled his shaking body against her chest.

Brandon stared down at the purple stains covering his shirt. When he looked back up, disbelief had hardened into rage.

“What did you do to my son?”

Madeline folded her arms.

Her silver bob remained perfectly smooth. Her expression held no guilt, only satisfaction.

Then she looked past Brandon at Luke and smiled.

“Are you sure he’s your son?”

A gasp moved through the relatives gathered near the patio doors.

Brandon pointed toward the front entrance.

“Get out of my house.”

Madeline’s smile flickered.

But before she moved, Luke suddenly stopped crying.

His small hand pressed against his chest.

His body curled inward against Nicole.

“Luke?”

Nicole pulled him back and saw the color draining from his face.

Brandon’s anger vanished.

Madeline stood perfectly still as Nicole screamed her son’s name.

And in that instant, Nicole understood something terrifying.

Madeline had not come to the party simply to humiliate them.

She had come because she believed Luke was hiding a secret.

👉 But when Brandon reached for his son, Madeline whispered six words that made Nicole’s blood run cold.
