Chapter 4 - The Missing Family History

Luke stabilized before they reached the emergency room.

His oxygen level improved, but the physician ordered additional tests because the episode had happened more than once.

Dr. Sarah Patel sat across from Nicole and Brandon in a quiet consultation room.

“Has anyone in either family experienced sudden fainting, chest pressure, seizures, or unexplained childhood deaths?”

Nicole shook her head.

Brandon hesitated.

“My mother said my older brother died as a baby.”

“What caused his death?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was there an autopsy?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was it cardiac?”

“I don’t know.”

Each answer made Brandon feel smaller.

Madeline had controlled every story about his childhood. His father had died when Brandon was twelve, leaving no one to contradict her.

Nicole noticed the photograph partly visible inside Brandon’s pocket.

“What is that?”

He showed her.

Nicole stared at the little boy beside Brandon.

“That’s not a baby.”

“No.”

“And he looks like Luke.”

“I know.”

The doctor carefully examined the picture.

“Photographs aren’t medical evidence. But if this child had symptoms similar to Luke’s, we need records.”

Brandon called Madeline.

She declined the first three calls.

On the fourth, she answered.

“What hospital?”

“That’s your first question?”

“Brandon—”

“What happened to Elias?”

Silence.

Then Madeline said, “He embarrassed this family. He frightened people. Your father refused to accept the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That some children bring suffering wherever they go.”

Nicole grabbed the phone.

“You are never coming near my son again.”

Madeline laughed softly.

“You think protecting him changes what he is?”

The call ended.

Brandon looked at Nicole.

For the first time in their marriage, he saw fear in her eyes that was not about Luke’s health.

It was about Madeline’s certainty.

👉 Then a nurse entered carrying Luke’s preliminary test results—and the doctor’s expression immediately changed.
