Chapter 11 - The Papers in Her Hand
Madeline walked into the hospital waiting area wearing a cream coat and carrying a leather folder.
Nicole stood immediately.
“You were told to stay away.”
Madeline ignored her and addressed the nurse.
“I am the child’s grandmother. His father is emotionally unstable, and his mother threatened me.”
The nurse calmly stepped between them.
“Only the parents may authorize access.”
Madeline opened the folder.
“These documents show that the house they live in belongs partly to me. I have rights concerning anything that occurs on family property.”
Nicole stared at her.
“This is about a house?”
“It is about protecting what my husband built.”
“You kicked a plate at a four-year-old.”
“He was behaving inappropriately.”
Nicole took one step closer.
“No. He loved you. That was his mistake.”
Madeline’s composure cracked.
“You have poisoned Brandon against his own family.”
“You did that yourself.”
Brandon arrived carrying copies of Elias’s records.
Madeline saw the name on the top page.
Her face drained.
“You spoke to him.”
“Yes.”
“He lies.”
“The hospital records don’t.”
Madeline lowered her voice.
“Your father left instructions.”
“I found his letter.”
“Not all of it.”
Brandon’s eyes narrowed.
Madeline tapped the leather folder.
“The house, the trust, and the family company were transferred under conditions you never understood.”
“What conditions?”
“That the assets remain with legitimate blood descendants.”
Nicole realized what Madeline was trying to do.
She had not accused Nicole of cheating merely to wound them.
She intended to challenge Luke’s place in the family and seize control of everything Brandon’s father had left.
Brandon took the folder from her hand.
Inside was a petition requesting emergency review of Luke’s paternity and Brandon’s inheritance.
It had been prepared weeks earlier.
