Chapter 9 - The Nurse Who Remembered Everything

Nurse Helen Brooks lived in a small brick house outside Franklin.

She opened the door before Brandon knocked.

“You have your father’s eyes,” she said.

Inside, Helen showed him a photograph of Elias at seventeen.

He was thin but smiling.

“He wasn’t dangerous,” she said. “He was sick and terrified.”

“Did you help him leave?”

“I helped him contact your father.”

Brandon stared at her.

“My father knew where he went?”

“For a while.”

Helen explained that Elias suffered from an inherited heart-rhythm disorder that had gone untreated for years.

Stress made the episodes worse.

His father secretly arranged specialist care.

Madeline discovered the plan.

“She threatened everyone,” Helen said. “Your father. The doctor. Elias. Even me.”

“Why?”

“Because admitting he was ill meant admitting she had punished a sick child.”

Helen opened a wooden box.

Inside was the missing final page of Brandon’s father’s letter.

It revealed that Elias had later changed his name and lived quietly in another state.

Brandon’s father continued sending money and letters.

Then Madeline intercepted their correspondence.

“She told Elias his father had abandoned him,” Helen said. “And she told your father Elias wanted no contact.”

“Where is he now?”

Helen handed him an envelope with a return address from Oregon.

The postmark was only three years old.

“I wrote to him after your father died. He answered once.”

Brandon held the envelope as though it were fragile glass.

At the hospital, Nicole called again.

Luke’s cardiologist suspected the same inherited disorder Elias had suffered.

Genetic confirmation would take time.

But family records could help doctors treat Luke safely.

Brandon looked at Elias’s address.
