Chapter 17 - The Note in Her Handwriting

The document came from Elias’s original medical file.

It was a guardian refusal form.

The physician had recommended immediate cardiac testing after Elias collapsed twice in one week.

Madeline declined.

In the handwritten explanation, she wrote:

THE CHILD IS ATTENTION-SEEKING. TESTING WOULD ENCOURAGE HIS BEHAVIOR AND DAMAGE THE FAMILY’S REPUTATION.

Her signature appeared below.

The same doctor had added a private note:

Guardian advised that failure to test may result in severe injury or death.

Madeline stared at the page.

“That proves nothing.”

Elias opened a second file.

It contained letters she had intercepted from their father.

A handwriting expert had already confirmed she added false replies telling each man the other wanted no contact.

Then Claire played an audio recording from a recent phone call.

Madeline’s own voice said:

If Brandon finds Elias, the trust changes. Luke must be disqualified before that happens.

Brandon looked at her.

“This was never about believing Luke wasn’t mine.”

Madeline remained silent.

“You knew finding Elias would restore his ownership rights. You needed Luke declared illegitimate so you could argue I had no valid heir and keep control of the trust.”

Her lips tightened.

“I protected what your father built.”

“You stole what belonged to his sons.”

The board voted to remove her permanently.

Claire informed Madeline that the forged filing, impersonation of Nicole, financial interference, and assault recording had been turned over to investigators.

For the first time, Madeline’s theatrical confidence collapsed.

She looked toward Elias.

“You would do this to your own mother?”

Elias’s expression did not change.

“You stopped being my mother every time I begged for help and you called me a liar.”

Madeline turned to Brandon.

He stepped beside Nicole.

She had nowhere left to look for loyalty.

👉 But Madeline’s most desperate act came after the meeting, when she tried to take Luke directly from his own front yard.
