Chapter 8 - The Child She Erased
The former administrator, Margaret Shaw, agreed to meet Brandon at a diner near the abandoned facility.
She was in her seventies and carried a folder wrapped in plastic.
“I wondered whether anyone would ever come asking,” she said.
Brandon placed the photograph of Elias on the table.
“What did my mother do?”
Margaret looked at the boy for a long moment.
“Your father brought Elias for temporary care. Your mother changed the arrangement.”
“How?”
“She signed papers claiming the boy was violent, delusional, and a danger to his younger brother.”
“I don’t remember being afraid of him.”
“You weren’t. According to staff notes, you followed him everywhere.”
Brandon’s throat tightened.
“Why didn’t my father take him home?”
“He tried. Your mother threatened to accuse him of endangering you. She also controlled access to the family money.”
Margaret opened the folder.
Inside were copies of intake documents and staff reports.
Several nurses wrote that Elias was gentle, intelligent, and physically ill.
One report recommended cardiac testing.
It had been stamped DENIED BY GUARDIAN.
The guardian’s signature belonged to Madeline.
“What happened to him?”
Margaret hesitated.
“He ran away when he was seventeen.”
“Did he survive?”
“I don’t know.”
She slid one final page toward Brandon.
It was a statement Elias had written before disappearing.
My mother says I am not really part of her family. Someday Brandon will have a child like me. When that happens, she will blame the child too.
Brandon’s vision blurred.
Elias had predicted Luke’s suffering decades earlier.
His phone buzzed.
Nicole.
Her voice was urgent.
“Luke’s tests found something. The doctors need information about Elias now.”
Brandon gathered the records.
As he stood, Margaret caught his sleeve.
“There’s something else. Elias left a name.”
“What name?”
