Chapter 5 - The Pattern No One Had Explained

Luke’s initial scans showed no immediate heart damage.
But one blood marker was abnormal, and his heart rhythm had briefly become irregular during the ambulance ride.
Dr. Patel did not offer a diagnosis.
She requested a pediatric cardiologist, previous medical records, and complete family history.
“Until we understand this,” she said, “he should avoid emotional and physical stress.”
Nicole nearly laughed from disbelief.
“His grandmother just kicked his birthday dessert out of his hands.”
“It wasn’t his birthday,” Brandon said quietly. “He made it for her.”
That detail broke something inside Nicole.
Luke had spent the morning helping stir the blackberry filling because Madeline once mentioned it was her favorite dessert.
He had asked Nicole three times whether Grandma would finally hug him.
Instead, she had humiliated him in front of the family.
Brandon sat beside Luke’s bed after he fell asleep.
“I should’ve stopped inviting her.”
Nicole looked at him.
“You kept hoping she would become the mother you needed.”
“And Luke paid for it.”
“That ends today.”
Brandon nodded.
His phone buzzed.
A message from his cousin Amy appeared.
I THINK I KNOW WHERE ELIAS’S RECORDS ARE.
Amy explained that after Brandon’s father died, Madeline emptied the family home. But several boxes had gone to a storage unit managed by Brandon’s late uncle.
Amy still had the key.
Brandon stood.
“I’m going.”
Nicole caught his wrist.
“Don’t confront your mother alone.”
“I’m not confronting her. I’m finding the truth.”
Before he left, Luke woke and reached weakly toward him.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“Was Grandma right?”
Brandon leaned close.
“About what?”
“That maybe I’m not yours.”
Brandon’s eyes filled.
“You are my son in every way that matters.”
May you like
But when he stood, he realized he still had no idea why Madeline had planted that cruel doubt.
👉 Inside the storage unit, Brandon found a sealed envelope addressed to him in his father’s handwriting.
