Chapter 7 - The Voice on the Tape

The cassette player crackled.
Then Madeline’s younger voice filled the storage unit.
“Stop breathing like that.”
A child sobbed softly.
“I can’t.”
“You can. You want attention.”
“My chest hurts.”
“You will not ruin another evening.”
Brandon gripped the table.
The child begged for his father.
Madeline replied, “Your father is tired of your performances too.”
Then came a sharp sound, followed by something breaking.
The recording ended.
Amy covered her mouth.
Brandon rewound it and played it again, as though repetition might change the words.
It did not.
Madeline had used the same phrases on Elias that she used on Luke.
Dramatic.
Weak.
Embarrassing.
Born wrong.
At the hospital, Nicole received a video call from Brandon.
He played only enough of the tape for her to understand.
Her face went pale.
“She knew Luke’s symptoms.”
“She knew because she saw them before.”
“Then why didn’t she warn us?”
Brandon looked at the hospital bracelet.
“Because she didn’t see it as illness. She saw it as shame.”
Nicole’s anger sharpened into something colder.
“We need the missing page.”
Amy searched another box and found a ledger belonging to Brandon’s father.
One entry listed monthly payments to a private residential facility outside Nashville.
The payments continued for twelve years after Elias supposedly died.
Brandon stared at the final payment date.
It was made only six months before his father’s death.
Elias had been alive.
Possibly into adulthood.
And Madeline had erased him from the family.
Amy looked up the facility.
It had closed years ago after allegations of abuse and falsified records.
