Chapter 18 - Her Last Attempt at Control

Three days later, Nicole stood on the front porch while Luke drew with chalk on the walkway.
Brandon was inside speaking with Claire.
Elias sat nearby, telling Luke about Oregon.
A dark sedan stopped at the curb.
Madeline stepped out.
Nicole moved immediately between her and Luke.
“You are not allowed here.”
Madeline held up a gift bag.
“I came to apologize.”
Elias rose.
“You don’t know how.”
Madeline ignored him.
She called toward Luke.
“I brought you something, sweetheart.”
Luke pressed closer to Nicole.
“I don’t want it.”
Madeline’s smile tightened.
“You don’t mean that.”
“Yes, I do.”
She took another step.
Nicole raised her phone and began recording.
“Leave.”
Madeline suddenly dropped the bag and rushed toward Luke, reaching for his arm.
Nicole blocked her.
Brandon burst through the front door.
“Get away from him!”
Madeline tried to move around Nicole.
Elias stepped into her path.
For one second, mother and abandoned son faced each other.
Madeline’s hand froze inches from him.
“You destroyed this family,” she hissed.
Elias shook his head.
“No. We survived you.”
A car door slammed behind her.
Claire had arrived with a court officer carrying the temporary protective order Brandon requested after Madeline’s hospital confrontation.
Madeline was formally ordered to stay away from Luke, Nicole, Brandon, Elias, and the house.
She looked around at the family photographs visible through the open doorway.
For decades, she had decided who belonged in them.
Now every person she had controlled stood united against her.
As she was escorted back toward her car, Luke called out.
Madeline turned.
Luke held Nicole’s hand.
